Marissa Alexander retrial another black mark on the record of Angela Corey

State Attorney Angela Corey is becoming the face of racism in the legal system. Vindictive, compassionless, incompetent and polarizing, Corey is known for retaliatory tactics against coworkers and even journalists who criticize her. In seeking triple the sentence for Marissa Alexander (a life sentence in a case in which no one was injured) is Corey declaring war on critics who seek to have her removed from office or just a war on common sense?

Cats respond to #WomenAgainstFeminism with new blog: Confused Cats Against Feminism

we hunted the mammoth

You can't argue with that! You can’t argue with that!

So two of the females in my household have decided, sadly, that they want to get in on this whole Women Against Feminism thing. Yes, that’s right: they want to publicly declare their opposition to feminism.

Against my better judgment, I agreed to take pictures of them with signs spelling out their objections. None of their arguments make much sense to me, but, hey, they’re entitled to make their case on the internet if that’s what they want.

There’s just one little complication: the two antifeminist females in my household are not, you know, human females. They’re cats. Not being, strictly speaking, women, they can’t really post their pics to the Women Against Feminism blog.

So in the interest of free speech and fair play, I’ve set up a Tumblr blog where my cats, and other cats who share their beliefs, can take…

Music to my ears: Right Said Fred remakes song in honor of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad

In March, the British newspaper The Guardian indicated more than 3000 emails of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad had been leaked to them by a “Syrian opposition group”. Oddly the revelations that seemed to most fascinate the media was the dictator’s itune downloads which included Harry Potter movies and cheesy pop music.

The cheese bit back when John Oliver invited one of the favored bands, Right Said Fred, on his show Last Week Tonight and they performed a parody “You’re too awful for this earth” to the tune of their hit I’m Too Sexy.

Enjoy the clip but be warned, like the original, this tune will get stuck in your head and you’ll find yourself humming “You’re an asshole. An asshole. Everyone thinks you’re an asshole!” for days.

Lyrics:

YOU’RE TOO AWFUL FOR THIS EARTH
TOO AWFUL FOR THIS EARTH
SO AWFUL IT HURTS
YOUR FACE BARELY HAS A CHIN
IT BARELY HAS A CHIN
YOU LOOK JUST LIKE HIM…

YOU ARE JUST A WALKING TAINT
THE OPPOSITE OF A SAINT
AT LEAST HITLER COULD PAINT

YOU’RE A MONSTER
AND A VOLLEYBALL FAN

BUT MORE THAN THAT, YOU’RE AN ASSHOLE

#YesAllWomen: What difference does it make?

Feminist Ire

Finola Meredith has a piece in The Irish Times today bemoaning the #yesallwomen hashtag on twitter. When I saw the headline “The Twittersurge #YesAllWomen is a useless weapon against endemic misogyny” I laughed. What’s a better weapon? An Irish Times feature with a Breda O’Brien riposte the following day?

May the liberal force of Fintan O’Toole be strong in you, Irish Times Columnists.

Meredith’s issue with the hashtag is that she believes that tweeting that is about as useful as going outside in the street and shouting “sexist men are bastards” and it will make no difference. Tempted as I am to go and stand outside Coppers this Saturday night to disprove her point (Just imagine the real life “NOT ALL MEN!!” screams you’d hear afterwards), there is an important point hidden in here concerning major media outlets that dominate, such as The Irish Times, who have a role…

An Open Letter to Paula Deen:

Dear Paula Deen,

So it’s been a tough week for you… believe me you I know something about tough weeks being a beginning food writer and lowly culinary historian.  Of course honey, I’d kill for one of your worst days as I could rest myself on the lanai, the veranda, the portico (okay that was really tongue in cheek), the porch..whatever…as long as its breezy and mosquito-free.  First Food Network now Smithfield.  (Well not so mad about Smithfield—not the most ethical place to shill for, eh, Paula?)

I am currently engaged in a project I began in 2011 called The Cooking Gene Project—my goal to examine family and food history as the descendant of Africans, Europeans and Native Americans—enslaved people and enslavers—from Africa to America and from Slavery to Freedom.  You and I are both human, we…

Wishing Never Changed A Damn Thing

Carrie Cuinn

I haven’t posted about the ongoing SFWA controversy in depth because I looked at the initial outcry, and the immediate response of some SFWA members, who stood up in the Forum* to say, “This has to change,” and I thought we were making progress. Over the course of a couple of days, the President made a statement, the previous editor stepped down, and a task force was formed to revise the Bulletin into a publication we could be proud of. I felt that if I publicly agitated for change the way that I was doing so privately, it would further distract from all of the great work that SFWA has done and is doing, and it would imply that the matter wasn’t being handled internally–and that wouldn’t have been true.

I’m proud of the changes we’ve made lately, which include not only moving to a higher standard of…
